Dark Peak MAC remembered our friend and committee member Ian Warhurst with a fly-in, spot landing and limbo competition at our Birch Vale flying site on August 22nd 2026.
The event was well attended, with 15 members flying in the competitions, and the mass “fill the air” attempt with all members flying at the same time. A bring-and-share lunch was included, with all members bringing a variety of food to share with other members. Nobody went away hungry.
The spot-landing competition was scattered with landings as far away as 50ft (Gary) to a spot-on landing on the target, with everything in between. Members were ranked according to distance from the target – everyone got two attempts with the closest attempt counting. We then switched to a limbo competition, again with 2 attempts each. Scoring a single point for a successful limbo under the tape (set at aprox. 3 ft off the ground) and an extra point if you were assessed to be under 1 ft from the ground without actually hitting the ground. Landings under the limbo didn’t count.
After some serious concentration, and verification, we had a winner – with a direct hit on the spot landing, and a 2-point low pass under the Limbo.
Ian Pattison was presented with the trophy on the day by Christine Warhurst, and later, after it had been engraved, was presented with the engraved trophy at the following club meeting.
Congratulations to all who attended and took part in the flying, especially with the very low number of damaged aircraft (one if I recall correctly) given the “fill the air” attempt – the video of which should show below…
